Bug Alert: Hiding/Unhiding Friends in Facebook Using Internet Explorer

Update 04/22/09: This unhiding bug seems to be a bit of a moving target, so I've written a post that consolidates all the possible fixes I've found to date (as well as how it's supposed to work in the first place).

Thank you! I’ve been trying to unhide a couple of friends ever since Facebook changed to the new interface. Using the photo filter/add to news feed method worked like a charm!

I’m glad it helped you Joanne. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks so much. I do use Firefox but still couldn’t figure it out. Why is this not easy to do?

AF April 9, 2009 at 6:21 am

Thanks for the tip!
I hid a friend a couple of weeks ago – just to see what happened(!) – and until now didn’t know how to get them back!
You’ve saved my life… okay, you haven’t really but I thought I should let you know that your posts are useful!

Thanks Rosanne and AF. I’m glad the info was able to help you. FYI, I can see in my web stats that unhiding friends is the number one Google search that is bringing people to this blog, so obviously this is a problem for more than just us!

Running Firefox in Linux Suse, no edit nor Older Posts options. Facebook drives me nuts and seriously considering deleting my account.

I agree it’s really frustrating, Tom. I’m surprised you don’t have an Older Posts option. Does that mean you only see one page full of posts on your home page? That’s also a problem.

hi there, i am trying to figure out how to unhide some of the applications that i hid from my newsfeeds, becasue i was tired of hearing about farmville and zoo world and games like that. now that i want to play zoo world. i cant get anything from my friends cause its not showig up. I have checked in the applications settings , and nothing is actually blocked, but i still wont come up in news feeds, any thoughts.

To unhide applications, make sure you’re on the Top News view of your news feed and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click the Edit Options link at the right-hand side of the posts column. A window should pop up that has tabs for Friends, Pages, and Applications (if you have at least one of each category hidden). The Applications tab will list all the ones you’ve hidden with buttons to add them back to your news feed.

Note that if you’re on the Most Recent view and click the Edit Options link, you’ll get a different type of window that won’t let you unhide applications — just friends and pages.

If the above doesn’t work, check out this post for some other things to try:

If you have hidden a friend’s posts do they know?

Elizabeth March 12, 2011 at 4:26 pm

Hi Lin.

No, people have no way of knowing you hid their posts unless they were able to get into your Facebook account.

Elizabeth
