When I was doing my series on Facebook last week, I mentioned that I had wanted to do a post about synching different social media sites. Well, I've been doing some research into the various options and have discovered that there's so much out there that it would be impossible to write a single entry about it all. So instead I'm going to write individual posts about the different options available.
Today I'm going to show one way that you can display your Twitter posts on your Facebook profile.
Adding the Twitter Application
The first thing you need to do is install Twitter's own Facebook app.
- Go to the Twitter Application page on Facebook.

- Click the "Go To Application" link.

- Click Allow. You'll then need to log in to your Twitter account so Facebook can access it.

You're now on your Facebook's Twitter application home page. This has all the posts on your Twitter timeline, with your most recent tweet at the top. If you refresh your browser, the page will update with the latest posts from your timeline.
- The three tabs at the top—Twitter Home, Profile, and Settings—are all links to those pages on the Twitter site. (I keep accidentally clicking on them thinking they're taking me to those sections on Facebook.)
- The "Allow Twitter To Update Your Facebook Status" feature means that whenever you post something to your Twitter account, your Facebook status will change to that tweet and it will be added to your Wall. I don't do this because I think a lot of tweets will be out of context on Facebook (e.g. @Replies) and wouldn't make any sense to my FB friends. However, if you do want to do this, click the button and you'll be prompted to confirm that you want to do this.

- You can send a tweet using the box that says "What are you doing?" However, this will NOT update your Facebook status line.
Now you can read and send tweets from within Facebook. To get to this page in the future, click the Applications link at the bottom left and choose Twitter from the menu.
Adding the App to Your Profile
If you want your friends to be able to read your tweets, you need to add the Twitter application to your own profile.
- From the Applications menu, click the Edit link at the top.
- From your list of applications, scroll down to the Twitter one and click Edit Settings.

- Click the Profile tab.

- Click the Add link in the Box section, and pick who you want to see your tweets from the dropdown box.

- Click Okay.
- Click the Profile link at the top of the page.
- Click the Boxes tab. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see a Twitter box with your current tweet in it. You can drag it to another location on this page if you want.

As you can see, if you click the Pencil icon at the top right of the box, you have an option to move it to your Wall.
A lot of people would like this because that's the first page of your profile that your friends will see. However, there's a bug when you do this. You get a box that says there's no content available.
I did some hunting around the forums and discovered that this bug has been reported/complained about numerous times since last summer, so I wouldn't get my hopes up any time soon that it's going to be fixed. (I actually don't know if this is a problem with Facebook or with the application, which was developed by Twitter, so I'm not sure who should be dealing with it.)
So that's one way to connect Twitter and Facebook. There are others as well, which I will post about later. In the meantime, if you have any specific questions, please send them to me at F1@TechForLuddites.com.
