Update on Bug Alert: Missing Boxes Tab on Facebook

In my original post about missing Boxes tabs from a few weeks ago, I provided a solution that worked for some people. However, yesterday, reader Robert contacted me to let me know that he'd tried the procedure several times with no success.

So he and I went back and forth via e-mail several times, with me asking lots of questions and asking him to try various actions, and we were finally able to reinstate the the tab... Then it disappeared again.

So we worked on it again, and finally managed to get it back and, as far as I know, it's still there. :)

I wish I could tell you what actually worked, but we tried so many things, I'm not exactly sure. BUT, if the original solution doesn't work for you, here's what I'd suggest you try:

  • Try deleting some other tabs from your Profile page to see if that brings Boxes back. To do this, click the tab and then click the pencil icon to bring up a box that lets you delete it. (Note that you can't delete the Wall, Info, or Photos tabs—at least, not on purpose! :) Try this with 2-3 tabs before you give up.
  • Try ADDING a couple of tabs to the page. To do that, click the tab with the plus sign. There will likely be a few applications already listed. If you click one, it will be added to the tabs. (It may appear in the extra tabs under the one with the two arrows.)

If neither of the above works, this next option may do the trick, but it make take a little while, depending on how many applications you have installed, and you may have to go back later to add boxes back to that tab (assuming it reappears...)

  • Click the Applications link at the bottom left, then click Edit at the top of the menu.
  • From the Show dropdown menu at the top right, choose Authorized to display all your installed apps.
  • Click Edit Settings beside EVERY application on your list, then click the Profile tab. Anywhere it says "Added" beside "Box" or "Tab", click the Remove link, and click Okay.
  • Once you've completed this, log out of Facebook and log back in. You can check your Profile page to see if the Boxes tab is back. If not, go into your list of applications again and add any one of them back to a box.

Hopefully, your Boxes tab will now be back. (If not, I'm stumped... but if you let me know, I'll try to find another solution...)

If you want to add more boxes to that tab, go back to your Applications list and edit the settings for it again. I would NOT recommend adding any new tabs at this point, since that appears to be where the problem starts.

This is definitely one of the weirdest bugs I've found on Facebook (which is saying something!). Good luck!

I was able to restore my Boxes tab and all the apps placed there by using the last solution posted. It did take a little while (as noted) but was worth the time to get my stuff back! Thank you so much!

Eric, do you have any boxes in your left-hand column on your home page/profile page, e.g. Photos, Links, etc.? If so, click on the pencil icon in the top right-hand corner and choose Move to Boxes tab. That should bring it back. You have to have at least one box on the page for the tab to appear, so if you want to move that one back to your Wall, you’ll need to add a different box to the tab first.

It happened to me on last update too, all I had to do was to activate an application that didn’t have boxes active… it came back and all the apps that had boxes enabled already and weren’t showing magically reappeared!! Hope it helps!!!
