Reader Questions: More About Facebook Pages

Since I posted my series on Facebook Pages a couple of weeks ago, I've received several additional questions through comments and e-mails. I'm going to respond to a number of them here so everyone can benefit from the answers.

Is there a way to tell if a Page is tied to a personal account?

This question related to my post, Setting Up Your Facebook Page, which discusses whether you should tie your Page to your personal profile or as its own entity. Some people created their Pages long before reading this and now don't remember whether they tied it to their profiles or not.

It's actually pretty easy to tell if the Page is associated to a profile or not. If, when you log in (using your Page's credentials), you see a link to Create Your Profile in the header, then it's not tied to one.

If, instead, it has the standard links of Home, Profile, Friends, etc., then it's tied to a personal profile (either your normal personal one, or one you set up specifically for the Page).

Note: There's one exception to this. If you created an independent Page, then set yourself as a secondary admin, when you're working on your Page from your regular account, you'll still see the standard links. However, I imagine that if you knew enough to do this, you probably haven't forgotten how you set it up in the first place.

Is there an Admin section that has basic info: who set up Page, when created, etc?

The only admin section is on the Edit Page page. It's about halfway down the page, in the right-hand column. It lists who all the admins are, but no other information besides that, unfortunately. (Although that would be a great idea!)

I know there is a way to prevent outside comments to the page, but is there a way to preview comments left by fans of your page before letting it appear to the general public?

Unfortunately, no. They go live immediately. I think this is actually one of the biggest flaws on Facebook. Administrators should have the option to moderate comments made on their Pages, just like you have that option on a blog. Even worse, unlike with personal profiles, there's no way to be alerted when someone does leave a comment (or post any type of content) on your page. So you do need to check your page regularly to see what your fans have been saying on it.

Individuals that became fans can not have their related pages be fans, is that correct?

The question continued, "They have to choose between their page being a fan or them personally being a fan, but not both? is there a way around this?"

I wasn't entirely sure what the reader was asking here, but here's the answer to one interpretation.

One Page cannot become a "fan" of another Page—only individuals can be “fans. However, you can add other Pages as "favorites."

For example, I (Elizabeth) am a fan of Facebook’s own Page: www.facebook.com/facebook.

I also administer my Tech for Luddites Page and I’ve set the Facebook Page as one of T4L’s favorites, which you can see on the Boxes tab.

However, if what the reader was wishing could be done is for Tech for Luddites to be a fan of Facebook and show up in its list of fans, that's not possible. If I knew the people who administer the Facebook Page, I could request that they add T4L as a favorite Page—that’s the only way my Page would show up on theirs.

So if you know other people administering Pages on topics related to yours, you could ask them to make your Page a favorite and you would do the same for them. The problem with that is, if you don’t know who the administrator is, you have absolutely no way of contacting him or her privately.

How can I add my tweets to the Page's Wall?

The question continued, "I have tried installing the Twitter application put it installs it for my personal page not for my business page, which is what I want to do."

There does seem to be a problem with the Twitter application working with Pages. While you can add it, it doesn't actually create a box anywhere on your page to display the tweets (not exactly useful...). I tried it myself, plus checked out some discussions of other people having the same problem. If anyone knows a solution to this problem, please let me know.

In the meantime, there's another application called Social RSS that you can install on your Page. It lets you import any RSS feed (up to five of them), so you could use your Twitter feed as one of them. You can see an example of this on my Tech for Luddites page, on the Boxes tab.

You'll see the Social RSS box in the top left and my Twitter feed is the third one down. You can also put this box on your Wall tab, although it becomes a lot smaller and harder to read. Note that it doesn't update quite as quickly as your tweets either. The minimum time you can set for it to check for new ones is 30 minutes.

Is there a way of inviting people to join your Page as fans?

There's no way to invite people to join as fans as the Page administrator. You can only do it from your personal account once you've become a fan of the Page. You'll see a link in the top left-hand corner that says "Suggest to Friends."

Note: When you click on Suggest to Friends and choose some people to invite to join the Page, their pictures and names will become grayed out, so you can't select them again. Another reader asked if the grayed-out names are everyone you've invited or everyone who has become a fan of the Page. She was concerned that if it was the latter, she could end up inviting people over and over again who had already decided they didn't want to become a fan. The good news is that you can't do that. Once you've invited someone, their name stays grayed out forever, whether or not they become a fan of the Page.

Is there a way to export a member list from Facebook?

This reader wanted to compare the names of the people who were members of one of her Facebook groups with another list she already had. Unfortunately, Facebook doesn't provide that functionality. You'd have to write down all the names of the members in your group yourself to compare them. The same applies to the list of fans for your Facebook Page.

How do you make a live link in the Write About section?

On the left-hand column of your Page's Wall and Info tabs is a box that says "Write About" where you can add whatever info you want. One reader tried adding a link to her company's blog, but it wasn't being made live, i.e. you couldn't click on it to go to the Page.

To make the link live, you must include the "http://" at the beginning of the URL. So, for example, if I put in "http://www.TechForLuddites.com," it will work. If I just put in "www.TechForLuddites.com," it won't.

Tip: Adding those extra letters might make your URL too long to fit on one line. If that's the case, you can remove the "www." part of the URL and the link will still work, e.g. "http://TechForLuddites.com."

I hope you've found the above information helpful. I'd like to thank all my readers who have submitted questions. By answering them, I'm able to provide more Help to others who come to the site. If you have any questions, about Facebook Pages or another topic, please send them along!

Above in this question:
“I know there is a way to prevent outside comments to the page, but is there a way to preview comments left by fans of your page before letting it appear to the general public?”

I would like to know: How do you prevent outside comments to a page?

I can’t seem to find that setting anywhere in my FB page settings…

Elizabeth January 31, 2010 at 11:28 pm

You can’t prevent fans from commenting on things you post, but you can stop them from posting their own content to your Wall. Go to your Wall, click on Edit Page on the left-hand side, and then click the Edit link under Wall Settings to set fan permissions. You can also remove content (including comments) after they’re posted.

Thanks, Elizabeth.

I’ve already done the steps you mention above to prevent fans from posting their own content. I was trying to find a way to prevent them from commenting as well, like this FB page: http://www.facebook.com/nexium#/nexium?v=wall

When I read the question above that said “I know there is a way to prevent outside comments to the page…” I thought maybe someone knew a way to do it, but I guess there isn’t.

And yet, how did the Nexium FB page do it?

Elizabeth January 31, 2010 at 11:59 pm

Hmmm… I don’t know how they did that. I’m going to do some looking into it and I’ll report back if I find out anything. First time I’ve seen that.

when i click on the “see all” button under a page; it lists all the fans, including me. but most everyone else has an “add as friend” button next to their name, and i don’t. how do i get that?

Elizabeth February 22, 2010 at 6:37 pm

That button is for you to add the person as a friend to your personal account. So you can’t “friend” yourself. :) Other people looking at the list will see that button beside your name if they’re not already one of your Facebook friends.

Did anyone here ever find out how Nexium has configured their Fans Page to disable comments on wall posts?

jen May 23, 2010 at 7:57 pm

i also am trying to figure out how to block fans from commenting on links and photos.

Elizabeth June 6, 2010 at 7:40 am

As far as I know, there’s no way to do this. You can prevent fans from posting their own content, but not from commenting on what’s there.

Hi
I am having great trouble trying to set up a FB Page without it being attached to my personal profile. Have things changed recently? Or am I missing the obvious!
Thanks

Elizabeth October 25, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Hi Heather.

Sorry for the delay in replying. It seems to still be set up the same way — make sure you’re logged out of Facebook before trying to set up your unattached page. It’s also possible there was a temporary glitch when you tried to do it previously — very common with Facebook.

Hi,

If you can’t prevent fans from responding or posting comments, then I suppose they can also create discussions? Maybe it has that tab because the page I created is linked to my personal page?

Thanks.

Recently my formerly publicly searchable page is now no longer public. I dont know why and I dont know how to fix this. I changed nothing in my settings, and yet my business page, when i use my vanity url, is not working, where it did about a month ago. Any ideas how to fix? I’ve reported this to FB but they are not very helpful. thanks!
