You may have logged into Facebook recently, scanned your home page, and thought, "I saw all these yesterday... Where are the more recent posts?" Or, you may have asked yourself, "What's all this new crap showing up on here that I don't care about?"
Yes. Facebook has changed their News Feed yet again (after all, it's been 6 whole months since the last time they pi$$ed everyone off!). To get their version of why they did it, you can read this note on the Facebook page or this FAQ page in their Help section.
Here's my favourite part of the explanation—you'll see why as I go through the various changes:
Highlights and the News Feed were combined into a single stream so that you could have more control over what you view on your home page and stay connected with your friends.
News Feed
Remember that Highlights section they added in the last redesign in the right-hand column? It was a bunch of random items that you never had any idea how they chose them so you pretty much ignored them most of the time? They decided to make that your default view. (It's also what you see when you click the News Feed filter in the left-hand column.)
The new News Feed is basically a subset of what your friends have posted in the last day. As with the previous Highlights section, their criteria for selecting what goes there is a mystery, although here is their vague description of how it works:
The News Feed algorithm bases this on a few factors: how many friends are commenting on a certain piece of content, who posted the content, and what type of content it is (e.g. photo, video, or status update).
Well, that certainly clears things up. As far as I can tell, you have no way of indicating what type of content you actually do find more interesting, which is why that quote above about giving us more control is so ridiculous. Ummm... "no" control is more than what, exactly?
If you actually want to see what people are posting as they're posting it, you can click the "View Live Feed" at the top of the page. According to the Help page, this view will stay as long as you remain logged into Facebook (even if the browser closes). I've had it switch back a couple of times but I can't pinpoint a common action that caused it.
Live Feed
The Live Feed is pretty much what the previous home page was—a list of everyone's posts as they wrote them. There is one major difference, however. It also includes items that used to only show up in the Recent Activity section of your Wall, things like who have become friends, who has joined a Group or a fan Page, etc.
I'm actually finding the reaction to the latter very interesting. This info used to appear in people's News Feeds prior to the last redesign and a lot of people were VERY upset that it went away, including me. I even wrote a blog post about it: Memo to Facebook: Put Friending Info Back on the Home Page. With this latest update, though, I'm seeing a lot of comments along the lines of, "Why are you cluttering up my home page with all this information about who's becoming friends with whom, which I couldn't care less about!"
This reaction tells me two things:
- People don't like change. Even if it's a good change. Now, if Facebook had added this info back within a few days of the outcry, then users would have been happy because it would have been fresh in their minds. But after six months, you get used to what you have and that becomes the new "good." It's the same theory behind why we still use QWERTY keyboards when it's been proven that it's not a very efficient way to organize the keys. But we know it.
- People are different. What one person loves, another person's going to hate. And when you have 300 million+ users, that really complicates things. But there are lots of ways this could be addressed to make everyone happy. For example, why couldn't they add the same Hide buttons to those kinds of posts that they do to every other kind so those who want to see them will and those who don't, won't.
Of course, I was already aware of the above points. It would be nice if someone could inform the brain trust over at Facebook about them...
Another thing that's different about this Live Feed is what happens when you click the Edit Options link at the bottom of the page. You used to get the window that lets you unhide people you've already hidden from the feed. Now, you get a window that also lets you say who you want to see more of.

This actually confuses me somewhat, since Live Feed should be showing you everything from everyone unless you've hidden them. Having a "Show More" option assumes you're showing less of others. That would make sense to me for the News Feed view because they're picking and choosing from among all the stories but, not surprisingly, you don't get that option on the News Feed page.
Likewise, I don't really get the concept of having a "maximum" number of friends showing up on your home page. But I guess as long as you set the number higher than the number of friends you have, it won't really make a difference.
Update 10/28/09: Since the launch of the new feeds, a lot of people have discovered that some of their friends are missing from the Live Feed. One of the reasons is that they have more than 250 friends. But then the other problem is that some people aren't getting the Edit Options link at the bottom of their feed. I've posted possible fixes in a new post: Bug Alert: Friends Are Missing from the New Facebook Live Feed.
Suggestions Box
There's one other change in the design worth noting. Now that they've eliminated the Highlights section from the right-hand column, that freed up some space. So while there used to be just one Suggestion on the page, now there are two. But the bigger difference is the kind of suggestions they're making. They used to mainly be suggestions of people to add as friends or Pages to become a fan of. There's a much wider gamut of ideas now.
For example, the other day I was told I should reconnect with a friend by writing on her Wall. I found that a little odd, but okay, I could choose to ignore it if I wanted (although I actually DID end up writing on her Wall). But now they're also telling you to tell your friends to do something, like add a profile picture or fill in more profile information. Personally, I find that a little intrusive, but I'd be interested in hearing other people's takes on it.
So, that's what the fine folks at Facebook have been spending their time doing lately. Love it? Hate it? Let me know!
In the meantime, here's an interesting interview with Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, on how he and his colleagues respond to user feedback.

You always explain this stuff so much better than anyone else. Do you mind if I put a link to this article for my Facebook friends? I think this is really helpful after a Facebook weekend of confusion.
:) D
Hey, Diane, I’d LOVE it if you’d share this with your friends. The more the merrier. :)
Great… it is now posted. All weekend long my Facebook friends have complained about the new features. Your article is very helpful.
:) D
This is what happens to me:
1. Live feed appears to be also picked items, some of which are older. I do not believe I am seeing everything that friends post, just the ones that the algorithm decides I should see.
2.I Do not ever see an “Edit options” button. I would like to make it so it is set at 5000 friends the limit of fb friends. (Wonder if this is due to my browser Mozilla firefox.)
I don’t care about the friends adding friends bit, but I do want to see what they post.
So I am currently NOT a happy camper with the changes.
Hi A.L.
I haven’t heard anyone else mentioning the problem with (1) yet, unless it’s related to some people’s posts not showing up altogether. But I’ve had some people have success with (2) by trying the suggestions in my follow-up post:
http://www.techforluddites.com/2009/10/bug-alert-friends-are-missing-from-the-new-facebook-live-feed.html
I definitely agree on “people don’t like change” and “people are different.”
So, based on that, why we aren’t just given more control and flexibility over what we can hide or unhide or how we want to organize our own pages. You might love seeing who’s friending whom, it might annoy me. With a simple scroll down menu, we could both be happy! (and, could I please hide the obnoxious and completely random suggestions made on the right sidebar!!?)
Thanks again for a great post!
thanks thanks!!!! my friend steered me here after I posted my confusing in my status update…
RE: suggestions — the other day I got the most annoying and nagging suggestion regarding a friend that is a recluse and really digs holes for herself: post on her wall – suggest friends, she only has 15 friends. It was like the pathetic reality of this friend’s negative vortex was coming out in Facebook!
This Zuckerberg kid is on a different planet.
a few weeks ago I thot I discovered that by ramping up the # in my Friends box in the Edit Options that all the Pages I subscribe to would also show up on my Live Feed page … now they are not. I would like them too – ideas? Thanks :)
Hmmm… I’m not sure, but one thing I would do is go to your News Feed view and click the Edit Options box at the bottom of the page to see if they’ve accidentally been hidden. (You won’t see Pages in the Edit Options box on the Live Feed page.)
I’ll see if I can find anything else. I know FB is constantly changing stuff behind the scenes that affects some people, but not all, and they frequently go back to normal within a day or two. Not sure if that applies in your case or not.
Okay, here’s a thought. What browser are you using? I recently saw a note on Facebook on Internet Explorer that it wasn’t supporting my version anymore and then there were a couple of times when it said it couldn’t even find Facebook. I also saw a note in the Help files from someone who was having a problem seeing some types of content in their news feed who said it was fixed when he upgraded to version 8. So if you’re on IE, you might want to try that.
How do you keep your posts from showing up on News Feed or Live Feed? I do want friends to see what I post on my profile – when they go to my profile – but I don’t necessarily want them to get live feed or news feed on what I’m doing or whose wall I am writing on. Is it possible?
Sharon, I don’t think there’s any way to prevent your status updates from showing up on other people’s home pages or what you write on other people’s Walls. But you can prevent other types of content — Links, Notes, games info, etc. by going to Settings > Application Settings and clicking Edit Settings beside each application. (Unfortunately, there’s no global setting.) When the window pops up, there’s usually a tab for Additional Permissions. That has an option called Publish to Streams. If you turn that off, it won’t show up in other people’s news feeds.
You also can’t control the info that gets posted automatically by Facebook, like X became a friend of Y, or A commented on B’s post.
My FRIENDS list cannot be gotten because of the recent change. Why must you mess with something that would take away the friends list.
The connection list does not always show——DUH—DUH
How can this possibly be considered BETTER? Viewers do not like changes they have sprung on them—–why not bring these fiture changes to a vote??????
Ruth, to see your friend lists, click on Friends in the left-hand nav bar and it will expand to show you all your lists. To see all your friends, click on the Account link at the top right, then Edit Friends. Then click on Friends in the left-hand area. BTW, I’m not saying this is a good way to do this — just letting you know the way to find them now.
A common issue most people have is that they want their feeds to be de-cluttered. In other words, void of irrelevant content. On the news feed, in the opinion of some, game application updates are irrelevant(i.e. “Suzy Q just harvested 10 pumpkins”/ “Matt just took out the Yakuza with his Mafia”, etc.).
I’ve created a poll for people to share their opinion on the matter (is it a hassle to see these updates or not?), that can be completed here:
http://twtpoll.com/dy5wc8
Paste the url into your browser and vote. The poll closes on feb 28, and results will be posted the following day. It only takes a few seconds to vote, so make your opinion heard.
I will follow up with a helpful tip on de-cluttering your news feed with simple privacy options.
Thanks Tech for Luddites!
