I'm not exactly sure in what version of Firefox and Internet Explorer this feature first appeared—I only stumbled on it recently. But it's definitely a nice addition. I tend to use the zoom out feature more often than the zoom in, like when an image is so large I have to use the scrollbars to see it all. But I occasionally use the zoom in option as well, especially if I can't quite make out something that's written in small text.
The keystrokes for zooming in and out are the same in both browsers:
- Zoom in: Ctrl+ +
- Zoom out: Ctrl+ -
- Return to normal: Ctrl+ 0
Internet Explorer also has a dropdown list at the bottom right where you can pick specific zoom levels.
Firefox doesn't have the preset zoom levels, but it does let you zoom just the text by going to View > Zoom > Zoom Text Only. I'm not exactly sure what the benefit of that is, but it's always good to know your options.

Fabulous tip for a baby boomer whose eyesight isn’t what it used to be. I spend a lot of time on my computer and the features to increase text size are a godsend.
Great tip! This will come in handy when I’m visiting web sites that are using the tiniest font imaginable.
I’m not sure if you’re interested in this, but there’s a Ning community for women who write on-line. The URL is wwwonline.ning.com.
