When I decided to move Tech for Luddites to WordPress, I knew I wanted a theme that provided more control than most of the free ones currently available. I had seen many references to Thesis and how easy it is to customize, including by Brian Clark, founder of Copyblogger, that I have long thought is one of the best designed blogs out there. (He's also the co-founder of the company that developed Thesis.)
So on the morning of October 30th, I plunked down my $87 for the Personal Option, installed it, and started redesigning T4L, expecting a virtual walk in the park.
Ummm, not so much. In fact, by the end of the day, I was seriously considering taking advantage of their 30-day money back guarantee. And that was BEFORE it ate my entire custom CSS file, causing me to lose hours' worth of work. But being a teensy-tinsy bit on the stubborn side (my friends are trying to hold in their laughter right now), I was not going to let some WordPress theme beat me, daggum it! Fortunately, I discovered the DIYthemes Forums, an unbelievably helpful resource with unbelievably helpful people. (The fact that there were more than 7,000 threads asking for help also made me feel better about my own initial struggles with it...)
So after working more with the theme, I realized it really isn't all that difficult—once you learn some basic concepts and figure out where the potential pitfalls are. And while most of that information is available in the forums, I also realized a lot of people don't have the time or inclination to wade through them trying to piece together the bits and pieces that will help them get started on the right foot.
Tech for Luddites to the Rescue!
T4L is now a member of the Thesis affiliate program, meaning that whenever someone purchases a copy of the theme by linking from my site, I'll get paid a commission.
But, of course, just reselling it doesn't do YOU a lot of good, so I've also created the Thesis Theme Starter Pack, a free eGuide that explains the basic concepts you need to know to begin working with the theme, from using the Thesis Options interface within WordPress to writing your own custom functions. It also includes the code for several commonly requested customizations, including adding a clickable header and adjusting the spacing between widgets.
