Getting Started with Thesis Theme for WordPress

You've just bought Thesis—congratulations! You're now the proud owner of one of the best tools out there for helping you design a website that looks and acts exactly how you want. But, if you're like many new users, after you've installed the theme and clicked Activate, you're suddenly going to realize you're not actually sure what to do next. Maybe all the choices in the Thesis Options panel seem a bit overwhelming. Maybe you're wondering where all the other options are. Either way, I can almost guarantee you'll have at least a few questions. In this first issue of the T4L Thesis newsletter, I'll help you find the answers.

THESIS RESOURCES

DIYthemes Forums: I can't recommend this discussion board enough. All of the official moderators and frequent visitors are incredibly generous with their assistance, from answering simple questions about which CSS selector applies to a given site feature to sharing the exact line-by-line code for complex custom functions. Make sure you check out this page of tips on how to get the most out of the forums. (Login required.)

Official User's Guide: The menu on this page also has links to great tutorials and the Answers blog (login required), another valuable source of information.

W3Schools: The place to go if you want to learn more about coding in HTML, CSS, and PHP (or simply if you need to refresh your memory...)

#thesiswp: Use this hash tag to share with and learn from the large community of helpful Thesis-philes on Twitter. (Learn more about hash tags.)

Thesis Gallery Showcase: There's nothing quite like seeing what everyone else is doing with Thesis to get your own creative juices flowing.

Tech for Luddites: (D'uh! :) T4L now has a one-stop Thesis resource page where you can find links to the most recent posts, newsletter archives, and all the resources listed above.

JUST THE CODE, PLEASE

This code will move the nav bar from above your header to right below it—probably one of the most commonly requested customizations I see on the forums. If you don't want a menu at all, just use the first line.

In custom_functions.php

remove_action('thesis_hook_before_header','thesis_nav_menu');
add_action('thesis_hook_after_header','thesis_nav_menu');

HOT SITE SPOTLIGHT

Platinum Lounge

This cool retro-themed site for a hair salon in Santa Cruz, California, was designed by Melissa Smith from Equity Marketing Solutions. The salon's personality really shines through. I love sites like these that you would never guess were designed in Thesis (or on WordPress, for that matter!).

You can follow Melissa on Twitter at @meleighsmith.
